More than a year ago, I posted a note about the pending renovation of Lief Erickson Park, and expressed concern about the wild Quaker Parrots living there. My most urgent concern was that any necessary nest removals wouldn't happen during breeding season, at time when young parrots and/or eggs were present.
Fortunately, the folks doing the renovation listened to these concerns, consulted with experts, including NY DDC's Barry Schwartz, and removals have been postponed until September. City Councilman Vincent Gentile was also instrumental in forging a compromise that would allow the project to proceed on schedule without harming the birds, and we are especially grateful to him for this.
